This week, my guest talks about finding what she wanted to pursue within the entertainment industry. I had the same struggle. Initially I was so laser-focused about getting my foot in the door, that I didn’t stop and think about what I actually wanted to do in film or television. Part of this is needing to be in the biz to have the information to make that decision. However, when you have all that information, it can still be daunting.
Once you have your first assistant job, here are some tips to discover what you want to do:
1) Say yes to everything.
Yes, it’s cheesy, but maybe you’ll surprise yourself.
2) Do a lot of coffees.
Don’t be afraid to ask people who have made their next step to coffee. You can learn more about what they want to do.
3) Print a t-shirt that says “I don’t know what I want to do with my life” and wear it under your blazer.
Classy, productive fashion.
4) Pay attention to what’s happening around you.
Actually listen to your boss’s calls instead of mindlessly scrolling the internet or trying to shake the lint out of your keyboard. That way, you can learn a little bit about what they people who talk to him do.
5) Join a cheesy networking group.
6) Ask your boss for advice.
In a way, that’s what they are there for.
7) Consider law school.
Your mom wanted me to put that one in.
8) Just do something.
It’s easy to be frozen in indecision, but you can always change your mind. Give yourself the benefit of trying something new, giving it a chance, and then pivoting if it doesn’t work out.
9) Think about your priorities.
Do you prefer steady employment and an office holiday party? Probably don’t become a creative. Do you like to spend days on your feet? Consider production.
10) Listen to my podcast!
Hopefully each episode will give you a little more insight into the various paths in this business, and the ways to pursue them. This is obviously advice #1, but I didn’t want to seem too cocky.
